Who is Using Open Education to Support Global Health? Are You?

In September the Clinton Global Initiative will host its flagship meeting in New York. Since it was started in 2005 by former President Bill Clinton, CGI has mobilized almost 300 commitments from its members valued at over $2 billion.

This year CGI is interested in commitments focused on the nexus of education and global health, two of the four focus areas. We're helping them look, particularly for projects that are being planned or are recently underway, that use open education (OER) approaches to support global health. Are you involved in a project like this or know of one? If so, please let me know via email (dwitzel@forumone.com) or phone (+1 571 641 3029).

The University of Michigan has an initiative we're calling "Health OER" that involves all our health professions schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, and Pharmacy) and our School of Information. We're working with health professions schools in Africa (initially in Ghana and South Africa) to build a reciprocal, collaborative environment for the co-creation and use of OER materials for health education. We have some information posted at our site, and some pilot materials posted. One of our innovations is to have students do the initial IP clearing steps. We have several medical students working this summer on learning materials that will soon be posted on our site.

I spoke with Tom Kalil a couple of weeks ago about this in the context of CGIU.

The Hewlett Foundation, Soros Open Society, and the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research are providing some of the support for Health OER. Our objective is to scale up our efforts in Africa to build a Global Health OER program.

Tufts (across their health schools) and Johns Hopkins (Public Health) are the two other universities I'm aware of that are doing OER in this space.
