This is an excellent recent article from the WSJ.com describing the pressure from funders for researchers to collaborate online. It mentions in particular the "disease foundation", including Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Fox Foundation, and groups interested in this issue. I could imaging forming a donors circle in which groups agree to a common technology.
