Today the
MacArthur Foundation announced it's award to Kofi Annan of the first MacArthur Award for International Justice.
According to Foundation President:
Jonathan Fanton.
Kofi Annan’s life work embodies the values of justice and human rights and the eternal hope for a humane, peaceful world that justice makes possible. It was under his leadership as Secretary General at the United Nations that the International Criminal Court was established and the Responsibility to Protect became an accepted principle for international action in the face of the worst human suffering. These critical building blocks of an effective international justice system form a legacy that will benefit the world for generations to come.
Since leaving the UN Annan has also been involved in some inspiring efforts, including leading the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), whose initial website Forum One helped develop at
http://www.agra-alliance.org/ . Annan is noted in this recent article about agriculture reform in Africa in the
Washington Post 12/9/07:
African governments have promised to double their spending on agriculture. And the Gates Foundation and former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan are leading an effort to bring to Africa the green revolution that swept through Asia.
