Some 2,000+ laborers in Bangalore have registered on a new online jobs and networking service called
Babajob. This has been written up in the
IHT and
NYTimes and elsewhere, and there is an informative
video of founder and former Microsoft guy Sean Blagsvedt, talking about it.
What others have said, and what I see as innovative with Babajobs is:
-it's designed to directly help people who are likely not online and will not soon have their own computers
-it plays off the importance of connections and referrals in India (hm... where is that not important?) by showing interconnections
-it pays "mentors" who help connect people they know with jobs, thus adding some effective lubrication to the whole system
What Blagsvedt has started here is really revolutionary and a great example of a private sector efforts that will help transform social issues.
